Rahul Bose born on 27 July 1967 was born to Rupen and Kumud Bose is an Indian actor, screenwriter, director, social activist, and rugby union player. He describes himself as “half Bengali; one-fourth Punjabi and one-fourth aharashtrian”.His early childhood in Kolkata, West Bengal and then moved to Mumbai with his family. His first acting role was at age six when he played the lead in a school play, Tom, the Piper’s Son.
As a child he took an interest in sports after his mother introduced him to boxing and rugby union. He also played cricket and was coached by cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.He studied in Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and attended Sydenham College.During his school days in Mumbai, he got involved with sports-boxing and rugby a game.
These intrests kept him occupied through out college Rahul is an avid rugby fan and is even makes sure to keep himself free for three months in a year in order to play rugby. He even plays international rugby in the National Orange Indian Rugby Team. Rahul Bose is a former member of India’s international rugby team, the National Orange Indian Rugby Team.
He settled for a career in the advertisement sector working as a copy writer at Rediffusion and was later promoted to advertising creative director though wanted to become an actor. Rahul Bose started his acting career on the Bombay stage in Rahul D’Cunha’s Topsy Turvey and Are There Tigers In The Congo?. D’Cunha’s aunt was the casting director for director Dev Benegal’s film English, August and suggested that Bose should play the lead role. He got his first big break with director Dev Benegals ‘English August’.
His first film pushed him onto the international acting stage. After English, August Bose found work in television; he was offered a role in India’s first English-language television serial, A Mouthful of Sky and also co-hosted BBC World’s Style! with Laila Rouass. Rahul Bose gave up his job at “Rediffusion” as a creative director to become a serious actor, writer, and director. He followed it up with a bigger hit ‘Bombay Boys’. He made futher steps into the film industry with ‘Split Wide Open’.
By the time he had acted in his next movie ‘Takshak’ he was already a force to reckon with in the Indian Film Industry. His follow up of ‘Everybody says I’m Fine’ debuted Rahul Bose as a scriptwriter and as a director His next film ‘Mrand Mrs Iyer’ saw him take on the most social based character pre ‘Mr.and Mrs Iyer’ taking on the ills of society and on the fate that society casts upon a woman. Films ‘Ek Din 24 Ghante’ (2003), ‘Chameli’ (2003) and ‘Silsilay’ (2005) were his first forays into the Bollywood style of filming.
The film Chameli’ (2003) won four awards for Best Cinematography (Asian First Film Festival 2005, IIFA 2005, Filmfare 2004 and Sansui Viewers Choice Awards 2004). Rahul Bose is the unconventional actor who is by all means conventional. He has propagated film art as one that brings forth concerns that the society does indeed suffer from unlike the supposed portrayed Indianism of mainstream commercial Bollywood.
He participated in the relief efforts that followed the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and is also the founder of the anti-discrimination NGO, The Foundation. Rahul is well-known for his social engagement and for his conviction that he would never do a commercial mainstream film.
