Naseeruddin Shah is an extraordinary actor characterized by seamless and gripping performances in cinema and theater for over 30 till now.Naseeruddin Shah was born on 20th July 1950 in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, India. His older brother Lt General Zahiruddin Shah was in the Indian Army. Shah did his schooling at St. Anselm´s Ajmer. He graduated in arts from Aligarh Muslim University in 1971 and attended National School of Drama in Delhi.
Naseeruddin Shah ‘s first claim to fame was the 1980 film Hum Paanch. His next major success in mainstream films was the 1986 multi-starrer film Karma where he acted alongside veteran Dilip Kumar. In 1988 he played Inspector Ghote in the prestigious Merchant-Ivory English language film The Perfect Murder. Naseeruddin Shah acted in many movies with Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil like Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1977) and Aakrosh (1980).
In 1981, he started appeared in a more commercial movie Umrao Jaan. He worked with Subhash Ghai in Karma (1986) fighting the evil Doctor Dang. and was one of the three heroes in Rajiv Rai’s Tridev (1989) which was a huge hitNaseeruddin Shah had also acted as the Maratha King Shivaji in another eponymous television series Bharat Ek Khoj based on Jawaharlal Nehru’s book The Discovery of India directed by noted film director Shyam Benegal.
Film Iqbal (2005) saw him give another impressive performance as an alcoholic cricket coach. Naseeruddin Shah’s directorial debut in movie, Yun Hota To Kya Hota, was released in 2006. The movie stars several established actors such as Konkona Sen Sharma, Paresh Rawal, Irfan Khan, newcomer Ayesha Takia, his son Imaad Shah and his old friend Ravi Baswani.He started a theater group called Motley Productions with Tom Alter and Benjamin Gilani.
Naseeruddin Shah has been giving performances with his theatre troupe at places such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Lahore. He has directed plays written by lavender kumar Ismat Chughtai and Saadat Hasan Manto.Naseeruddin Shah is married to Bollywood actress Ratna Pathak in 1982 after the demise of his first wife Naseeruddin starred in international projects such as Monsoon Wedding in 2001 and a Hollywood comic book adaptation The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003 alongside Sean Connery where he played the role of Captain Nemo. He was most recently seen in A Wednesday.
He also made his Pakistani film debut in the critically-acclaimed and controversial film Khuda Ke Liye. Naseeruddin Shah has been one of the few actors who has managed to balance a career in both mainstream and alternative cinema. Naseeruddin Shah has seen success in both mainstream Bollywood cinema as well as in Parallel Cinema. He also appeared in many international films.
