Kishore Kumar, born as Abhas Kumar Ganguly on 4th August, 1929, was affectionately called Kishore Da, He is a legend in Hindi film, multi talented person has excelled as a playback singer, actor, composer, lyrics writer, director, producer and script writer. Kishore Kumar, was from small place known as Khandwa located in the state of Madhya Pradesh. He was born in a typical Bengali family and was the youngest among his siblings. His father Kunjilal Ganguly was a lawyer by profession and his mother Gauri Devi.
His eldest brother Ashok Kumar was a famous actor when Kishore Kumar was very young. Abhas or Kishore Kumar the apt opportunity to get an easy break into the Hindi filmdom. Kishore Kumar did not have a formal training in music, but it was just a matter of time before he started taking a keen interest in movies and music. It was Kishore Kumar’s dream to become a famous playback singer and be counted among legends.
He would often go to the studios and ask producers if he could sing on the movie’s soundtrack. Initially he could not develop a style of his own but nevertheless he perfectly imitated K.L. Saigal Kishore Kumar, perfected yodeling, a unique style he heard amongst the Austrian music collections of his brother Anoop. In Hindi film industry, his yodeling turned out to be widely popular and became a trademark of Kishore Kumar. His songs sounded absolutely natural, like laughter. He used to incorporate non-sensical terms into his songs and give it an entirely new feel.
The songs of Kishore Kumar have an extraordinary blend of romance, emotions, naughtiness and melancholy. Kishore Kumar, has sung soulful songs for Dev Anand and also fun filled songs for Rajesh Khanna and later he sang for or superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Kishore Kumar, sang in various languages like Hindi, Bengali that was his mother tongue, Marathi, Assamese,Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam and Oriya. Music director S. D. Burman appreciated Kishore Kumar’s singing style and is credited for boosting Kumar’s singing talent.
Kishore Kumar sang for Anil Kapoor in Kapoor’s debut film as a leading man, Woh Saat Din and also recorded for his first superhit Mr. India. Kishore Kumar produced and directed some movies in the late 1970s and early 1980s, such as Badhti Ka Naam Daadhi (1978), Zindagi (1981) and Door Wadiyon Mein Kahin (1980). But none of these films did well at the box office. His last appearance as an actor was in Door Wadiyon Mein Kahin. As an actor, Kishore Kumar is best remembered for his roles Padosan and Chalti Ka Naam Gadi.
Kishore Kumar married four times, first wife was Ruma Guha Thakurta aka Ruma Ghosh, second wife was actress Madhubala, third marriage was to Yogeeta Bali, and fourth was Leena Chandavarkar and lived with her from 1980 until his death. On 13 October 1987, Kishore Kumar, died of a heart attack in Mumbai.
