Dharmendra is a legendary Indian actor who acted in successful Hindi films between 1962 and present. Film star Dharmendra was born 8th December, 1935. At Phagwara in Punjab, as Dharam Singh Deol

Dharmendra was fascinated with films right from childhood, often traveling miles to frequent the touring cinema.

He was married at the age of 19 and took up a job with an American Drilling Company boring tube wells. Fortunately for him, he was noticed in a Film fare spot-the-talent contest and came to Bombay to become an actor. He was signed by Arjun Hingorani for Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere (1960), his first film as hero for Rs 51 as signing amount.

The film also starred Balraj Sahni, Usha Kiron and Kum Kum. Ironically, after all the struggle and hard work he put in, he went unrecognized at the premiere of the film and sneaked back home on a train.

At the start of his career Dharmendra was usually cast as a romantic hero. His first major hit film was “Phool Aur Patthar”a love story between a criminal and a widow, finally made Dharmendra into a star. . Strong, supporting romantic lead roles in women-oriented films like Anpadh (1962) with Mala Sinha, Bandini (1963) and Soorat Aur Seerat (1962), both with Nutan brought Dharmendra to the fore.

Dharmendra also worked in comedy films like “Chupke Chupke”, a masterpiece from Hrishikesh Mukherjee. When action movies became popular in 1970′s he starred as action hero in many such films.

Dharmendra’s most memorable role as action hero was in the blockbuster film “Sholay” where he was teamed with Amitabh Bachchan. Dharmendra also played a Villainious role in his recent released film “Johnny Gaddar”. Satyakam saw Dharmendra giving perhaps his greatest ever performance.

Dharmendra is a man of performance of an honest, committed man who perseveres with his philosophy of total truth even when it brings about his downfall and one that was straight from the heart.

Dharmendra also ventured into film production and launched his sons Sunny Deol in “Betaab” He produced the film Barsaat (1995) as a launchpad for his son Bobby, as well as his nephew Abhay Deol in “Socha Na Tha”.

After a few years hiatus from acting since the early 2000s he is reappearing in films as character actor. His latest films “Metro” and “Apne” have been successful at the box office.

Dharmendra also formed a hugely successful pairing with Hema Malini, the two of them doing a string of hit films together – Naya Zamana (1971), Raja Jani (1972), Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Jugnu, Dost (1974) and Sholay among others they fell in love and married each other.

Dharmendra has been married twice and has five children from his first wife (most notably his two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol) are also successful actors. He has two daughters, Esha Deol and Ahna Deol, from Hema Malini, his second wife who is also an actress.

He became a Member of Parliament in 2004 general elections from Bikaner in Rajasthan on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.

Though Dharmendra didn’t won no major awards throughout his entire career, not even for Satyakam, Dharmendra has been awarded the Film fare Life Achievement Award for his contribution to Indian Cinema a few years back.

Dharmendra remained a top Hindi film star for three decades creating an influential image as a markedly North Indian (read Punjabi) macho man devoted to his mother and committed to upholding the honour of his family or the village.
