Dev Anand Profile
Dev Anand is one of the greatest stars of the Bollywood Film Industry. Dev Anand was born at Gurdaspur in undivided Punjab to Pishorimal Anand.
After completing his graduation in English Literature from the Government College, Lahore, he left home and landed at Mumbai to fulfill his passion of acting in films. Initial years were full of struggle as among other things he had to sell some of his possessions including a prized stamp collection and Dev Anand did job in the military censor office at Church gate, Mumbai, for a salary of Rs. 160.
Dev Anand is cherished as one of the great showmen of Bollywood. He was a leading hero for decades. With his brother Vijay Anand, Dev Anand produced or directed many of Bollywood’s true classics such as Guide, Tere Mere Sapne, and Johny Mere Naam.
Dev Anand’s first acting assignment came with Prabhat’s Hum Ek Hain (1946) but the film didn’t do anything substantial for his career. However at Prabhat, he met the young choreographer and assistant director of the film, Guru Dutt, thanks to a dhobi’s mix up. A deep friendship grew between the two of them. They promised each other that if Guru Dutt were to turn filmmaker he would take Dev as his hero and if Dev were to produce a film then he would take Guru Dutt as its Director!
Ziddi (1948) at Bombay Talkies was Dev’s first success. The film, co-starring Kamini Kaushal and directed by Shahid Lateef, is also known for Lata Mangeshkar’s first ever hit song, Chanda Re Ja. The following year he turned producer and launched his own banner, Navketan. Navketan’s first offering was Afsar (1950) starring Dev and lady love Suraiya and was directed by elder brother Chetan
Dev Anand co-produced the English Version of “Guide” with the Nobel Laureate Pearl S. Buck (“The Good Earth”). Eventually, his creative sensibilities got the better of him and he started writing and directing his own movies.
Dev Anand’s film production company Navketan International Films, which was founded in 1949, Anand has introduced a multitude of talent to the Indian Film Industry by way of actors, directors, music composers and cinematographers. Today, he continues to introduce new talent to cinema and experiment with new ideas for Movies.
The film Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971) launched the career of Zeenat Aman who made a tremendous impact as his sister in the middle of the cultists.
Other heroines Dev Anand has launched include Tina Munim (now Ambani), Natasha Sinha and Ekta. He also tried to launch his son Suneil with Anand Aur Anand (1984) but was unsuccessful. Dev Anand continues to make films today and though his last few films haven’t been successful he just keeps going with amazing energy – His philosophy being to think positive. To quote him, “I never give myself a chance to get depressed. I think ahead.”
And today, Dev Anand also heads one of the finest Film Sound Post-Production facilities in India – Anand Recording Studios – which has to its credit more than 3,000 Indian feature films that have been mixed/ surround mixed for worldwide release.
